There are two types of people when it comes to Christmas cards. The ones who have been thinking about them since July, and those that don’t think of them until they get the first one in the mail mid-December.
Whichever type you are, Christmas cards seem to be a source of consternation for most people. The endless choices, price points and pictures to choose from seem more than a bit overwhelming. Not to mention making sure you have all the addresses and actually getting them out. Sheesh!
I went through this song and dance for the first several years of marriage and parenthood.
UNTIL….
My best friend started designing Christmas cards (and invitations/save the dates/announcements, etc). She’d always been a artist, doodling and creating, long before graphic design was even a thing. I knew whatever she did it would be beautiful! And, can I tell you how much easier this has made the holidays for me?! All I do is choose the picture(s), and let her be brilliant. Even if it’s a year where we don’t have professional pics, she still makes them look awesome! Here is a glimpse at our cards from the past three years: (all professional photos courtesy of Christy Martin Photography)
I usually have her do a custom card for me, with a specific wording I have in mind, because I’m a word person. She also has some incredible templates that take the stress of having to think through the wording and design, and let you just pick the style you like. I love that some of my favorite cards, with some of my favorite people are now templates!
I adore getting Christmas cards in the mail! It’s one of my favorite parts of the holidays, seeing everyone’s beautiful family, and catching up on their year. I love seeing the smiling faces and posting them on our card hanger! It makes me feel like those friends and families who have been in your life, aren’t so far away. They feel a little closer and more in touch that time of year. And I love looking at them every time I walk past until the end of January when I sadly bring myself to take them down.
I know it can be a hassle to go through the effort of Christmas cards, but it’s one of those simple ways we can stay connected and make others smile. Do the Hard Thing and do Christmas Cards this year. Make it easy on yourself and find a cute template, or have a custom card created (or if you must, hit up Walgreens) but take the time and effort to kindle connection this holiday season. Get it done now before all the craziness hit and check one thing off the holiday to do list!
